My rack... well, racks.

By popular request of #cslounge, and one too many "hey nwf has a nice rack!" jokes, here are some pictures of my apartment's computational rig.



overview.jpg shows an overview. Left to right, top to bottom:

  • Big Blue Rack (originally AT&T, I think)

    • Hardware museum (see below)
    • Storage shelving. V. boring, sorry.

  • Kodak DigitalScience CD Library 144. 108 disc capacity, 4 drives. SCSI robot.
  • Sun Ultra 20 desktop (currently deskside for space optimization)
  • Desk! Contains Sun Microsystems Type 7 USB keyboard & 20.1-in LCD monitor. And dragons.
  • Yamaha S90 synth. Wonderful keyboard. MIDI generation & playback too.


museum.jpg shows my (now much reduced) hardware museum.

  • Apple Macintosh LC3. 680?0 @ 12MHz, 12MB RAM, 128MB(?) SCSI-I HD, 10BaseT NuBus card.
  • Hewlett-Packard Model 712/80. PA-RISC @ 80MHz, 64MB RAM, 2G SCSI-I HD.
  • SGI Indy. R4600, I think, but I don't remember the specs. (There's an indycam floating around as well, perched atop the rack, not visible in this picture.)
  • Omron LUNA 88K. Yep, it's an SMP 88K system. Ran Mach and KeyKOS. Lacking support peripherals.
  • HP 200LX handheld. 80186 compatible chipset; ran DOS 5 and HP's custom PDA environments from ROM. Best handheld ever made.
  • SHARP EL-5500][ Scientific Computer. Think the early 80s equivalent of the TI-92 or somesuch. QWERTY keyboard, BASIC interpreter, I/O, 20 character LCD.


dec-lower.jpg shows the two UPSes and Mnemoth, my storage server. The latter runs a dual core 2.6GHz Opteron 100, with 2GB ECC RAM, and 4x320GB disks in a RAID-Z. (Limited experiments suggest 100MB/sec sustained throughput on random read workloads, to give some idea of performance. This machine was surprisingly cheap to build, too.) Perched atop is a WRV-200 that is at the moment idle pending some hacking attention. The chip there is the sister of Mnemoth's CPU, but core 1 (we index from 0, remember) has a damaged L2 (we index from 1, remember) cache and throws ECC errors at a rate Solaris considers alarming. (That said, Solaris just offlined the core and kept running. I was impressed.)

dec-upper.jpg shows the two flapjacks (the community has seen those before), a little bent out of shape due to shipping from California. The top is Ganath which acts as a management node; the bottom is Nenoth, who hosts most of my externally-facing services. Perched atop is a 16 port Digi EtherLite serial mux and an ethernet switch for the management segment.

dec-top.jpg shows my network "backbone" in the form of a Dell PowerEdge 3024 switch (for the love of $DEITY, don't ever buy one. I am actively seeking a replacement) and a modified (ahem) WRT54G V3.1 (named Liroth). The breadboard perched atop him provides access to the JTAG bus and the dual serial ports (including serial console) (and thouroughly voided the warranty). The ATX PSU there provides power to Liroth, the serial mux, and anything else that wants it. (The ATX connector was replaced with a European-style terminal block -- that funky little white thing to the left of Liroth; I recommend that people upset with the proliferation of wall-warts in their lives take this approach.)
